May Bulldog Bark

Dr. Miller's Message

Hello Bulldog Families!  Well, May will be a busy month with all of our grade levels doing music programs, our family picnic, field day, Topping Town, the Talent Share, and the final day with Yearbook signing.  It has been a great year with notable growth in the areas of Reading, Writing and Mathematics.
We are so excited to send our students home for the summer as readers.  We will once again have the Dr. Miller Bookmobile this summer for 6 weeks starting on June 30th.  This is a great way for kids to get a free new book each week and as many other books that you would like to get for only $1 each.  I am also very excited about our daily story time this summer.  If you have not turned in your sheet and would like to get this daily call, please call the office.
Please talk with your child about the things they are learning during these last weeks.  There are a lot of economics lessons as your children are working on their Topping Town businesses, as well as, new units taking students just a little further in all academic areas.
Kids are doing a lot of end of year testing as we take district assessments that show us in comparison to the other 20 elementary schools in the NKC School District.  We want our students to do their very best and show what they know.  Our students worked very hard to do their very best on the MAP test this year.  We will get those results in late July or early August and will celebrate with kids the 1st day of school.
Thanks for a great year.

April Bulldog Bark

Parent Survey

We are requesting that our parents take this survey for our school.  The survey needs to be completed by May 15th.  Thank you for taking your time to participate!

Dr. Miller's Message

It is a great time to be a Bulldog.  We will be working very hard this month with our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders taking the MAP test.  These students will all be tested in the areas of Communication Arts and Math and our 5th graders will also be tested in Science.  They have been preparing and are ready to make us proud as they demonstrate their learning.

Our 5th graders did a wonderful job in the Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair.  Out of the 20 projects we could submit, the students earned 8 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 1 bronze. We also have some division winners and other special awards.  This is an amazing, hard working group of students.

In April, all grades will be tested in reading and we will also do our final testing on curriculum based measures to document student learning over the year.  Talk with your child about their growth and where they started and where they are now.  We love to celebrate learning and the kids love to be celebrated.

There are some tweaks to the lunch schedule during MAP testing.  If you are planning to come and eat with your child from April 21st-May2nd, please call the office to verify your student's lunchtime.

We have several fun activities for kids and families on the schedule before the end of the year.  Please feel free to come and join us.

We do have a bond and levy issue on the April 8th ballot.  Please feel free to visit the district website or give me a call to get more information about what the bond and levy would do here at Topping as well as in the district.

Thanks for all you do to support your student with his/her learning.  Together we can help your children grow and glow in their learning.

Bond & Levy Election Approaches April 8

NKC Schools has two questions on the April 8 ballot: a $20 million bond and a 26-cent operating levy. Remember to go vote! First, make sure you have all the information you need to make your decision by watching Supt. Todd White’s 17-minute presentation to the Community Involvement Committee – Essentials for Schools. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sgMEPnw4rjY

March Bulldog Bark

Dr. Miller's Message

It is amazing to realize that we are 3/4 of the way through this school year.  As we work with our students and we track their learning with them, it is wonderful to see the growth our kids are making.   I would encourage you to ask your child each day what learning targets (or I can statements) they are working on in math, reading and writing. You will be amazed at what is expected and achieved by our elementary students.

I did want to let you know that the district will have a bond and levy issue on the ballot on April 8th.  Please take time to get informed on the issues that directly impact our schools and then be sure to get out and vote.  Please let me know if I can help answer any questions you may have.

As we enter 4th quarter after spring break, we need to help kids understand that 4th quarter needs to be our best quarter.  Our expectations for learning will continue to be high for all of our students.  Help them end strong.

February Bulldog Bark

Dr. Miller's Message

As we enter the month of February, we are going to be challenged with the weather.  If you are online, your student has plenty of sites they can connect to practice reading and math skills.  If you are not online, reading is always a great activity.  The days that are added to the end of the year are not as meaningful to your student's progress as the days they might miss in February.
The kids have done such a great job in making learning the priority at Topping.  This month I have challenged the students to be nicer than they need be to make our school a great place for all kids to be.  We are struggling with attendance and having kids at school when they are healthy.  So let's work together to get all healthy kids to school everyday.
Thanks to all the Dads and other caring adults that came out for our "Donuts for Dads" event.  It was a great way to start the day and the kids were thrilled to have you here to show off the work they are doing.  Feel free to come back and share with us.  We look forward to parent involvement in all of our activities.  Come for lunch if you have a day where that will work in your schedule.  As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns, give me a call or come by.

January Bulldog Bark

Dr. Miller's Message

It is always so exciting to start a new year.  Although this is a half point for the school year, we spend some time talking with our students about what has been going well with their learning and what they would like to change to reach their learning goals.

Our reading scores looked great with our December assessments of the whole school.  When looking at the kids that were with us for more than 1/2 of the semester ,we have very few students that did not make the expected gains in reading or reach grade level.  Look at these numbers!

                Kindergarten – 3 students

                First grade – 1 student

                Second grade – 2 students

                Third grade – 7 students

                Fourth grade – 11 students

                Fifth grade – 7 students

Please continue to read with your students, practice sight words, or set time aside for them to read to themselves each day.  We know that kids need to read more to improve their reading.  With that said,  we will have $1.00 books available every Thursday in the office to encourage students to own the books they love and want to read.  This will start on Thursday January 16th.  Your student can come to the office after the 9:00 bell in the morning or at a time their teacher has set up.

We will continue to work with our tutoring kids.  You may be contacted about adding your student to that group if they are needing extra learning time.  We expect our students to all reach their potential.

Thanks for all of the support you give your students and our staff.  It takes all of us to help kids reach their potential and believe that they can achieve their dreams.  Looking forward to a great 2014!

December Bulldog Bark

Dr. Miller's Message

It is hard to believe that in a few short days we will be to the end of 2013 and then end of 1st semester.  As we wrap up the 2nd quarter and we begin to do some of our district wide benchmark testing, we will be working to see which students are making expected progress, which ones are making more than expected progress and which students are not making expected progress.

As we get this new data in between December and January, we will begin to make plans to move all of our students.  If you know that your child is lagging behind in reading, writing or math, I would encourage you to make time each day over the break for your child to work in these areas.  There are numerous programs that the NKC School District pays for that kids can log into from home.  If you are not on-line at home, see about taking several trips to the local library so your student can log on and get in his/her daily practice.

Our goal is to have every student reading, writing and solving math problems at or above grade level proficiently.  You are vital to your child meeting this goal.  Thanks in advance for finding time each day to allow your child to work on these areas.

It was great to see so many at Grandparents' Day.  We love to have you attend school events.  Please be watching for information from your child's teacher or listen for my Bulldog phone calls.  Thanks for a great 1st semester.

November Bulldog Bark

Dr. Miller's Message

It is nice to have the school year well underway.  We have our procedures established and have helped students regain their focus on learning.  As you learned at conferences, there are many activities that kids can be doing at home to improve their learning at school.  One thing we expect each student to do is read everyday.  These should be books that your student can read independently with 98% accuracy.  The skill we are working to strengthen with reading at home is that of fluency.  Research shows increased fluency helps improve comprehension.  Another activity that our students can work on is a variety of computer programs.  Many of these can be opened from the "student links" tab on the district web site.  The district has paid for these program to be accessible from home so kids can have extra reading and math practice.  These programs come with a tutorial program, so if your child misses a problem the problem is broken down and solved with them and they are given a similar problem to attempt on their own.  If you don't have computer access at home, the public library is a great place for kids to log-on and get this extra practice.

We will continue to work on making sure our kids are keeping learning as their number one goal each day at school.  When we have kids that are side tracked with behaviors , it steals so much critical learning time from your child and others.  Ask your student each day what their "I can" statement was in Reading, Writing and Math.  They should be able to tell you what they learned and how it connected to prior learning and how it will support future learning.  If they don't have any idea what you are talking about, then something distracted their learning.  If they know you are going to ask them about their learning targets,  they will probably pay more attention during their focus lessons.

We are looking forward to Grandparent's Day this month.  As always, you are welcome to send any special friend to school that day to eat with your child and share in their classroom learning.  It is a great event and we look forward to sharing the great things our kids are learning with our special guests.  Grandparent's Day will be on Tuesday, Nov.26th.  Please watch for a reservation form with specific times for each grade level as we get closer to the date.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to bring that to our attention.  We want this to be a great experience for you and your child.

October Bulldog Bark

Dr. Millers Message

What a great start to the year we have had.  Of our 232 returning students, we had 147 that maintained or increased their reading level this summer.  This is 63.6%.  As your children are working hard in school to learn to read more complex text, it is essential that they continue to practice these skills at home.  You can help your student by asking them questions about what they are reading and encouraging them to find at least 20 minutes a day to read at home.

We have parent teacher conferences this month.  We look forward to each of you coming to find out about your child's academic strengths and challenges and finding ways to work together to push our students to their fullest potential.  If you do not have a conference time scheduled with your child's teacher, please give them a call or shoot them an email to make this arrangement.  It takes all of us focused on the same goal to have every student reach his/her greatest levels.

All of our teachers are sending home homework this year.  Your child will be bringing home their Writer's Notebook several times a week and there is an expectation for daily outside reading and extra math practice.  If you do not have access to anything on-line, please let your child's teacher know and we will send home some hard copies of work for extra practice.

This month we have our Bully Night, skating party, end of quarter party and our Booster Club garage sale.  You are welcome to participate in each one.  Thanks to all who joined our Bulldog Boosters this year.  We are looking forward to growing our organization so any parent can find a way to be more involved at Topping

Thanks for a great first quarter.  Looking forward to great things happening for our kids the rest of the year.

September Bulldog Bark

Dr. Miller's Message

Helloooo Bulldog Families!   If this is not familiar to you, please call the office with your current phone number.  I will do phone calls for most of the events going on here at Topping.  We have found that often notes and flyers get buried in backpacks or left in mailboxes at school and many families don't need 2,3,4 or more copies of the same information.  When you see the 413-6660 phone number on your caller ID and school is not in session, it is typically me with a recorded message with some information that will keep you informed about something that is happening.  It is very rare that there is anyone at school when these calls are sent out, so there is no one to answer your call if you don't hear my message and try to call back.

We are off to a great start.  Your child should be able to talk to you about what they have worked on each day in Reader's, Writer's and Math Workshops.  Every grade level does these 3 workshops.  When talking to your student about what they did in school, asking specific questions will get you more information.  So something like, what was your focus in Reader's workshop…should get you a much better answer then what did you do today?

We are doing Bulldog bracelet Bravos this year rather than the Bravo tickets.  Talk with your student about how many bracelets they earned and what they earned them for.  Their bracelets should tie back to the 3 anchors of our PRIDE guide, which is Topping Bulldogs are Helpful, Kind and Safe. Asking your child about this will help them know that you think it is important that they are helpful, kind and safe at school so their learning is maximized by minimizing distracting behaviors.

As we start this new school year, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher or myself.  It will take all of us working together to move our students as far as they can go.  We will again be offering ELL tutoring and After School Tutoring starting the end of September or beginning of October.  Please watch for an invitation to participate, if your child needs this extra support.
Looking forward to a great year!
