Dr. Miller's Message
It is nice to have the school year well underway. We have
our procedures established and have helped students regain their focus on
learning. As you learned at conferences, there are many activities that
kids can be doing at home to improve their learning at school. One thing
we expect each student to do is read everyday. These should be books that
your student can read independently with 98% accuracy. The skill we are
working to strengthen with reading at home is that of fluency. Research
shows increased fluency helps improve comprehension. Another activity
that our students can work on is a variety of computer programs. Many of
these can be opened from the "student links" tab on the district web
site. The district has paid for these program to be accessible from home
so kids can have extra reading and math practice. These programs come
with a tutorial program, so if your child misses a problem the problem is
broken down and solved with them and they are given a similar problem to
attempt on their own. If you don't have computer access at home, the
public library is a great place for kids to log-on and get this extra practice.
We will continue to work
on making sure our kids are keeping learning as their number one goal each day
at school. When we have kids that are side tracked with behaviors , it
steals so much critical learning time from your child and others. Ask
your student each day what their "I can" statement was in Reading,
Writing and Math. They should be able to tell you what they learned and
how it connected to prior learning and how it will support future learning.
If they don't have any idea what you are talking about, then something
distracted their learning. If they know you are going to ask them about
their learning targets, they will probably pay more attention during their focus
lessons.
We
are looking forward to Grandparent's Day this month. As always, you are welcome
to send any special friend to school that day to eat with your child and share
in their classroom learning. It is a great event and we look forward to
sharing the great things our kids are learning with our special guests.
Grandparent's Day will be on Tuesday, Nov.26th. Please watch for
a reservation form with specific times for each grade level as we get closer to the date.
As always, if you have
any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to bring that to our attention.
We want this to be a great experience for you and your child.
Mid Continent Library News
November is National Novel Writing Month , aka ―NaNoWriMo,‖ is an annual event where participants bare their literary brawn through 50,000 words of fic-ion in 30 caffeine-fueled days.
We are here to help by providing write-ins. At each write-in, we'll provide space, chairs, power strips, and most importantly beverages so that writers can have a change of place to get out and write the Great Frantic Novel. Join us for a month of reckless literary abandon!
